In the summer of 2023, we launched our first-ever experimental summer program in Anyama

Oct 13, 2023
This initiative aimed to bridge the educational gap during the summer months, a period when students often face a void in structured learning activities, which can be a root cause of students not returning to school. Our program sought to keep students engaged in their education year-round, enhancing literacy and technology skills, and ultimately improving school retention while working towards our vision to harness the power of education as a driving force to transform communities.

During the summer, students in Anyama often encounter a lack of educational activities, leading to decreased school retention. Many resort to street vending, domestic work, or other unsanctioned activities to fill their time, which sometimes become their preferred activities instead of returning to school. Recognizing this issue, we launched our community's experimental summer program in 2023 to provide dynamic learning experiences.

Despite being the first time, we had about 25-30 students joining us daily, and the program had a profound impact on the students.

  • Preventing Learning Loss: By keeping students academically engaged throughout the summer, we were able to prevent the typical learning loss that occurs during extended breaks.
  • Enhancing Skills: The program offered a variety of activities designed to improve literacy and technology skills, crucial for students' academic and future career success.
  • Year-Round Engagement: The initiative ensured continuous educational involvement, maintaining students' interest and momentum in their studies.

One highlight was our field trip to the zoo, which helped students step out of their comfort zones and explore beyond their communities.

Looking Ahead As we reflect on the successes and challenges of our first summer program, we are more committed than ever to making a lasting impact and continuing to offer summer programs to our youth. We are excited to continue this journey and are grateful for the support of our community, volunteers, and donors.
